I don’t know how it is for you, but Valentine’s Day was always a big deal when I was a kid. Everyone in the classroom would decorate large paper bags with cut-out hearts and colorful markers. Our teachers would tape them to the back of our chairs, and they would fill up throughout the day. It was always a treat to get home from school with a bag full of My Little Pony® love notes and candy hearts.

These days, my mailbox still flows full on Valentine’s Day with beautiful handmade cards from my mom and my sister. In fact, the paper heart in the picture was the valentine my sister and her kids sent me last year. And though I still love the outpouring of support from others, I also like to do something for myself each year. On one such year, on an overly grey February day in New York, with the snowy sludge piled high on the streets, this recipe was reborn. Cut into hearts and adorned with all the pink and red I could find in my kitchen!

Love others, but also love your selfie.

Easy Bake Option:

Buy a tub of frozen chocolate chip cookie dough. Flatten and place in a 9 x 13 inch pan, press candies into the top. Then bake 18–20 min and cut into shapes.

What You Need:

3/4 cup Packed brown sugar
3/4 cup White sugar
1/2 cup Crisco (or butter), softened
2 large Eggs
1 teaspoon Vanilla extract
1-1/2 cups All-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon Baking powder
1/2 teaspoon Salt
1/2 cup Semisweet chocolate chips
1/2 cup Butterscotch chips
1/2 cup M&M’s®

Step By Step:

In a large bowl, combine 3/4 cup sugar, 3/4 cup brown sugar, 1 stick butter, 2 eggs, and 1 teaspoon vanilla. With a hand mixer on medium high, mix until blended and creamy.

Combine the 1 1/2 cups of flour, 1/2 teaspoon baking powder, and 1/2 teaspoon salt; add to the cream mixture. Next fold in 1/2 cup chocolate chips, 1/2 cup butterscotch chips, and 1/2 cup M&M’s®.

Spread batter into a greased 13 x 9-inch baking pan and press a handful of additional M&M’s® into the top of the batter. Bake at 350° for 18–20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

Cool for 30 minutes before cutting into bars or shapes.

Decorating Tips:

We love decorating with pink and red M&M’s® and cutting into hearts, but this amazing treat can be served many different ways.

Feel free to bake the blondie batter in a 9-inch greased cake pan and decorate with chocolate frosting, sprinkles, and rainbow M&M’s® for a giant birthday cookie! Then cut and serve in triangles like pizza!
