Teenages Witches Unite For An Amazing Sabrina Reboot!
I don’t know about you, but we spent the weekend binge watching Netflix’s new “The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” series, which was originally put in development at the CW – duh, cause it’s basically Riverdale 2.0. In fact it comes from the same team as Riverdale: Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. TV. Aguirre-Sacasa, who penned the Riverdale pilot, and Lee Toland Krieger, come back to blast us with a creepy new twist on our favorite teenage witch!
The new Spellman crew is worlds away from the bubbly Sabrina, the Teenage Witch series starring Melissa Joan Hart. The new project reimagines the origin and adventures of Sabrina as a dark coming-of-age story that traffics in horror, the occult and, of course, witchcraft. It’s a cure for the huge “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” hole that has been left in our hearts.
Here, Sabrina is a half-witch, half-mortal teen with a her charm little boyfriend Harvey, (ok ok he is not as hot as Archie but we will forgive the casting) and a gang of diverse gal pals and a delvishly loving family. However, when she turns 16, she’s forced to choose between the mortal world of Baxter High and the witchy world of the Church of Night, the devil-worshipping religion to which the Spellman family belongs.
Despite the darkness, there’s a sense of levity to the series. “Sabrina” mines a considerable amount of snort-worthy humor with its casual devilish references (you’ll lose count of the number of times you hear “Praise Satan!”). Its mythology is a weakness at times, but the writers’ full-throated embrace of all things 666 is commendable and aesthetically astonishing. Every frame is overstuffed with an atmosphere full of blood, ghosts, graves and pentagrams.
Already renewed for Season 2, it’s a binge worthy classic for a perfect post-halloween weekend. So get your PJs ready to spend all day on the couch, and dive in!
