Diary of a Fashion Intern: Entry 1

New York, NY; How To Shop Like An Intern.

If you have ever tried googling “What to wear on the first day of your fashion internship”, you probably did not have much success. For the last five years of my life, I have been dressing like a teeny bopper. With the length of my shorts being questionable, and a majority of my shirts looking like they are from Baby GAP, I was basically doomed when it came to dressing for my first day.

Having turned 20 this year and receiving my first real internship, I have graduated to the “business casual” look. This widely accepted office style sounds easy, but I often find myself wondering what works and what doesn’t. Yes, throwing on jeans and a blouse is business casual, but working for a fashion based company makes it a bit more complicated. A cute tank, culottes and Adidas superstar sneakers are totally acceptable, and even thin strap sundresses. I am considered to be pretty fashionable amongst my friends and never before struggled so much when dressing myself. When seeing everyone’s effortless style in the office, I can’t help but feel like Andrea Sachs from The Devil Wears Prada.

A lot of my free time is now spent online shopping and I have visited ZARA more times in the last 2 weeks than in my entire life. Shopping for me is usually easy, but now I must limit myself to appropriate lengths and styles from the “ladies with real lives” section. Yes, the struggle can be real, but thank goodness for moms who let you know when they can see your hot pink undies through your dress as you are walking out the door. #DiaryOfAnUnpaidFashionIntern
